The City of Rotterdam and Walk21 are delighted to invite you to join
us in Rotterdam for the 20th International Conference on Walking and
 Liveable Communities in 2019.
Hundreds of politicians, urban
planners, civic leaders and academics are expected to join so this is
your opportunity to share your experience and to be part of the
discussion at Walk21 Rotterdam from the 7th October to 11th of October
 2019.
Rotterdam reinvented itself. It is an a-typical European
city with modern architecture, high rise buildings in the city centre
and a traditional focus on car mobility. Cycling is part of the Dutch
DNA, but the city hasn’t paid enough attention to pedestrians the past
decades. Luckily things are changing. Rotterdam invested in public space
improvements and sustainable mobility the last decade. The city centre
is transformed into a City Lounge, which encourages people to meet, stay
and enjoy a network of public spaces across the centre, reallocating
road and parking space, slowing traffic speed and giving priority to
people on foot at an impressive scale. It has seen a measured
improvement in dwell time of 10% over the last two years, footfall spend
and community wellbeing. The challenge is to extend the inner cities
success throughout the whole city to make Rotterdam Happy and Healthy
 for Everyone.
Being part of wider metropolitan network with
short distances Rotterdam and other Dutch cities will be showcased at
the event. Rotterdam will cooperate with among others the national
government and local institutions to make sure Walk21 is an accelerator
for the Dutch national agenda on walkability.
